Coach V’s Grades: Texas-ISU

D'Onta Foreman. (Will Gallagher/IT)

We had a very uneven offensive performance yesterday. We had one fumble. We had one late interception. We managed to supply Iowa State with four drive killing penalties in the first half. We lost our starting center early in the second quarter. We waited too late to throw deep balls and we vacated the pocket out the back door too often. We missed a few blocks and a couple of creases but the main problem was not being consistent with our play. We still need to dress up our 18 wheeler package. We will need to be better than we were yesterday.

We still have a long way to go before we become the offense we have a chance to be. We only had one drop but we had one interception and one fumble to offset the good receiving day. We found openings in their secondary but nine poor throws hurt the cause. We had a few hurries/sacks allowed but several were the result of five happy feet in the pocket errors by QB1. We only had two false start penalties so we reduced those drive killing errors but we also had double figures in missed blocks that slowed us down. We had great tempo at times but we still need to understand whether we are taking advantage of the opponent or are we rushing ourselves into a mistake mph’s.

We had 26 MT’s yesterday and that’s attempting to give the benefit of the doubt when possible. I couldn’t determine the amount of busted coverages but I’m pretty sure it was close to double figures. Our DT’s played well but still need to come off blocks a hair quicker and finish the pass rush with a sack. The two gunslingers might make a few mistakes but they also make plays at 100-mph.

Always take the more pleasant report first so here you are. We are still far from consistent and still managed to rack up over 40 points and probably would have scored more if we had eliminated the pass. They couldn’t stop the run one ounce.

It’s obvious we were missing a few key ingredients in our offensive arsenal but the end result was still a positive as we go forward. We played very well at spots but getting a few starters back will really help the cause. We had a chance to see how our depth would perform and it will be interesting how that stacks up in the future. Some took full advantage of their opportunity but others might have been less than impressive. It was a solid effort and a nice win.

Wow. Clean up a few drops, a few bad snaps, a few missed blocks, a few off target throws and Texas might be mistaken for an offensive football team. That was pure fun. The only thing that would have made it better for me would have been more deep throws.

Coach V’s Early Practice Thoughts

Charlie Strong. (Will Gallagher/IT)

I have a few strong feelings about this season so figured might as well throw a few thoughts out there. I would like to start with my gut feeling concerning the win total — I think 10 is the bottom line and feel strongly that we win more than 10.
