Mondays in the Humidor with the Big Cigar

In this edition of Mondays in the Humidor there still isn’t much to sink your teeth into with spring practice going the way of the dinosaurs, or professional hockey ratings. The Cigar does have the goods on some coaching takes which are always interesting. The Cigar also talks a little about what Shaka Smart may be have brewing from a scheme standpoint, which may scare those not in the know currently, but in reality it’s not as bad as most think. Apart from football and hoops, there’s not much worth mentioning in these dog days prior to summer, inside the Humidor.

Shaka Smart was both today as he was announced as the new Men’s Basketball coach at Texas.

In Smart, Texas nabbed a 37-year-old, rising star who took Virginia Commonwealth to the 2011 Final Four in just his third season. The Rams recorded five straight upsets during that run, including top-seed Kansas.

The Rick Barnes era may at last be coming to an end. Although I was a native-born Texan (Houston), my family moved around to multiple spots when I was young and I arrived in Austin with no collegiate allegiances.

IT Hoops Roundtable – 1/8/15

As Big 12 play gets underway, Texas has found itself ranked No. 10 in the AP Top 25, but haven’t played like a Top 10 team for over a month now. UT barely escaped Lubbock with a W, then was humiliated at the Drum by Oklahoma on Big Monday.
