Spoon, Kings of Leon, Foo Fighters, My Morning Jacket, The Shins, The Strokes, The Methadones, Neko Case, Detroit Cobras, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists.
Most, if not all, of these bands/artists were actually formed more than 5 years ago, but they've hit the spotlight within that time period.
I have spoken and it is so ordered . . .

OK, a lot of you are cheating and naming bands who have put out good stuff in the last five years. You have to pick one.
I'll confess that I don't listen to the Foo Fighters but I'm still surprised it made so many lists. MMJ would have had a good claim for best of last 5 until they took a sh*t in the form of "Evil Urges." Detroit Cobras rock but they only do covers so I think that should necessarily disqualify them. I could definitely entertain arguments for The Shins or New Pornographers if that's where your tastes lie.
And the next person to say The Killers is getting cyber horsewhipped.

Nothing wrong with your list.

Thanks. One band that hasn't been mentioned that I really like, and are probably older than the last 5 years, is My Chemical Romance. I really like the Black Parade album.

Don't shoot me but I kind of like Vampire Weekend. I just don't know that I would see them at a large venue.

I have already given my choice but I really see Avenge Sevenfold being a great band in the coming years. I haven't heard a song from them that doesn't rock.

The couple of songs I've heard sound pretty good but nowhere near the inexplicable hype they've received.

If forced to choose one, I'd probably go with Spoon, with the Shins running second.
BTW, the fact that the Cobras do almost exclusively covers shouldn't DQ them at all because the songs they're covering are so old and unknown that they sound new. Your post asked for "best rock band of the last 5 years," not the "best rock band doing original material." Nonetheless, there are several other bands that I'd nominate before them.
Oh, and while I'll certainly take "Z" over it, "Evil Urges" kinda grows on you after repeated listens. MMJ is definitely one of the more interesting bands around. I like 'em better than TV on the Radio.
P.S. -- Should have mentioned the Yeah Yeah Yeahs previously. Wouldn't put 'em above some of the other bands, but they deserve mention.

Eventually, I may give Evil Urges another try. But the prospects for liking it are dim at best. I'm going to strongly disagree that MMJ is better than TVOTR. And I'm a huge pre-Evil Urges MMJ fan.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs should be mentioned, as well as The Walkmen. The Walkmen actually may be the best if you combine quality with quantity. They've put out a lot of good albums.

Gotta confess that I don't know much about the Walkmen. Heard of 'em. May have even heard a song or two at some point. But I don't have any of their stuff, either on disc or downloaded. I'll have to give them a listen.
And as long as I'm still thinking about current bands that are good, I've got to mention the Black Keys. Yes, they're more blues than rock, but I love 'em. I'll take them over the White Stripes.

Oh yeah, the Black Keys. I could definitely see someone making an argument for them. I'm taking a very broad view of rock. Basically, just pop music.
Bows and Arrows is a good starting point for the Walkmen. They don't "rock" in the traditional sense (though a couple songs do) and there's a lot of piano, trebly guitars, and the percussion is driving. Give 'em a listen.
