It might be hard to believe that the Texas high school football regular season is already halfway in the books, but week six marks the week when every team in the state begins district play which means the race for the postseason is just now getting started.  After having several future Longhorns off last week, all 19 2010 Texas commits are in action this week and all are playing on Friday night.

DeSoto was one of several teams across the state that had an open date last week but the Eagles are back at it this week with a district game against North Mesquite. The Eagles won the District 11-5A title last season and both Texas commits – receiver Darius Terrell and cornerback Adrian White – have been playing at a high level this season for coach Claude Mathis.

North Mesquite has a young ball club but it is a very well coached group with Mike Robinson at the helm and Robinson has at his disposal running back Joe Bergeron, a junior who is one of the top receiving fullback prospects the state has seen in recent years.

Aaron Benson has helped Cedar Hill to a the No. 1 ranking in the Class 5A AP poll but the Texas linebacker commit has to sit out last week’s game against South Grand Prairie due to the flu. Benson is a key cog in the Longhorn defense and his return could provide a huge lift as coach Joe McGuire’s ball club gets set to take on Irving High this week.

In Class 4A Denton Guyer has been just as impressive as Cedar Hill has been in Class 5A with the Wildcats getting little resistance from their opponents this season thanks to the standout job of Taylor Bible and friends on defense. Bible will lead Guyer into a district ball game this week against Denton High.

Sulphur Springs saw its 14-game winning streak go up in flames last week with a 45-0 loss to Longview. This week Bryant Jackson and the Wildcats will look to bounce back but the task of getting a victory figures to be a tall order as coach Barry Norton and a talented Texas High ball club come to town.

A loss to Gilmer is never something to dwell on as the Buckeyes have one of the top teams year after year in East Texas and coach Jeff Traylor’s bunch handed Daingerfield its first loss of the season. The Gilmer game however was one of the best outings of the season for Texas receiver commit Chris Jones and coach Barry Bowman will lean on Jones and a talented group of juniors as the Tigers host Hughes Springs this week.

On name recognition alone a matchup between Galena Park North Shore and Port Arthur Memorial should draw the interest of Texas fans. These two talented ball clubs have sent All-American players like Cory Redding and Jamaal Charles to Austin along with current Texas cornerback Chykie Brown.

North Shore coach David Aymond boasts Texas offensive line commit Trey Hopkins and Texas receiver target DeAndrew White as the Mustangs will look to follow up a big win over Southlake Carroll, but they will have to get past the Titans and their head coach – former Longhorn Kenny Harrison – to get the victory.

Case McCoy had an outing for the ages last week with six touchdown passes in helping Graham stay undefeated with a win on the road against Bridgeport. The schedule now gets very tough as Brad McCoy, the father of both Case and Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, will lead his team into a league contest against a stout opponent from Snyder.
