Just about all of the games for the future Longhorns are big games this week with four commits facing the possibility of their respective seasons being over after this weekend’s action.
In this regular season finale edition of the weekly commit preview we take a look at all 20 Texas commits and the lay out all of the playoff scenarios.
Case McCoy, QB, Graham: Even if Graham suffers would be a colossal upset loss to Breckenridge (1-8, 0-4) this week McCoy and the Steers (8-1, 3-1) will be heading to the playoffs out of District 2-3A as potentially the top seed in the Division II bracket due to Graham’s head to head tie breaker over Snyder. A Graham win sews up the top seed and a district championship for the Steers.
Connor Wood, QB, Houston Second Baptist: The Eagles (7-3, 5-0) are already in the playoffs coming out of TAPPS Division II, District 4. Wood and the Eagles face Tomball Concordia Lutheran this week and with a win the Eagles will finish with a perfect record in district play and wrap up an outright district championship.
Traylon Shead, RB, Cayuga: With last week’s huge road win over state-ranked Alto the Wildcats (7-1, 5-0) clinched a playoff spot. The only thing left for Shead and the Wildcats to figure out is which bracket they will play in, most likely the Division II bracket, and if they can wrap up the district championship which they can with a win over Grapeland.
Demarco Cobbs, ATH/WR, Tulsa (Okla.) Central: The playoff picture is very clear for Cobbs and the Braves (7-2) to clinch the school’s first playoff spot since 2003. If Central beats Stilwell then the Braves go to the playoffs. Even with a loss, Cobbs and the Braves can still get in if Ada loses to McAlester.
John Harris, WR, Garland Naaman Forest: District 10-5A can become very complicated with tiebreakers involving five teams vying for three playoff spots but Harris and the Rangers have an easy path to the postseason as they are in with a win against South Garland tonight. A loss and the Rangers will need help but they should be fine as long as a tie breaker does not involve the Rangers against either North Garland or Sachse since both of those schools own the head to head tie breaker against Naaman Forest.
Chris Jones, WR, Daingerfield: Jones and the Tigers have been running roughshod over the rest of District 17-2A and the Tigers are getting ready to start what many folks in East Texas think will be another run to a state championship. Daingerfield (8-1) has wrapped up the district title and if Jefferson beats Hughes Springs the Tigers will be in the Division II bracket, otherwise Daingerfield goes D-I.
Darius Terrell & Adrian White, DeSoto: As the biggest school in District 11-5A the Eagles already have sewn up the top Division I seed and now will look to win their ninth in a row and wrap up an outright district championship. The Eagles face John Tyler this week and the Lions are coming off of their first loss of the season.
Dominic Espinosa, OL, Cedar Park: The Timberwolves (6-3, 5-1) have a big rivalry game against Leander but despite the outcome Espinosa and the Timberwolves are already in the playoffs, but a win will get them a share of the District 16-5A championship. Cedar Park will be in the Division II bracket in the playoffs.
Trey Hopkins, OL, Galena Park North Shore: It has been an up and down season by the lofty standards at North Shore but Hopkins and the Mustangs (7-2, 3-1) are already qualified for the playoffs. North Shore can win the district championship and clinch the top seed in the Division I bracket with a win over Beaumont West Brook.
Taylor Bible, DT, Denton Guyer: The Wildcats have been nearly unstoppable in 2009 and have rolled through District 5-4A with a perfect record and will look to finish off a 10-0 regular season tonight in a televised game against rival Denton Ryan. If the Wildcats win they win the district championship and will be the top seed in the Division I bracket.
DeAires Cotton, DT, Alief Taylor: All that is known about the Tigers’ playoff scenario is that a loss will knock them out of the postseason. Depending on how District 18-5A runs its tiebreakers there could be a logjam for the final two playoff spots, but a win over Alief Elsik will give Taylor a head to head tie breaker advantage over both Elsik and Hastings.
Ashton Dorsey, DT, Tyler John Tyler: The Lions, who have been undefeated all season until last week’s upset loss to rival Tyler Lee, are already in the playoffs. The only question remains is where JT will be seeded in the Division II bracket? Dorsey and the Lions face DeSoto for the district title this week and regardless of the outcome they will either face Belton or Copperas Cove in the first round of the playoffs.
Reggie Wilson, DE, Haltom: Win or lose the Buffalos (4-5, 3-2) are in the playoffs and Wilson’s team will have overcome a rough start to the season to enter the postseason thanks to district wins over Burleson and Weatherford. The Buffalos, who own head to head tie breakers with Burleson and Weatherford, will enter the playoffs in the Division I bracket.
Greg Daniels, DE, Houston St. Pius X: The Panthers (7-2, 4-0) went undefeated in TAPPS Division I, District 3 round robin format and they will enter the playoffs with only a non-district game against Houston Bellaire left on the schedule.
Aaron Benson, LB, Cedar Hill: The No. 1 ranked team in Class 5A has been steamrolling people despite Benson and Texas A&M commit Ben Malena being in and out of the lineup. The Longhorns (9-0, 5-0) play Irving Nimitz this week for the district championship and for the top seed in the Division II bracket. The crazy thing with District 7-5A is that the final playoff spot could come down to a coin flip involving Duncanville, Irving MacArthur and South Grand Prairie.
Tevin Jackson & Adrian Phillips, Garland: The Owls wrapped up an outright district championship in 10-5A with last week’s win over Naaman Forest. The Owls (8-1, 5-0) are off this week and will be checking to see how District 9-5A shakes out to determine their opponent in the bi-district round of the Division I bracket.
Carrington Byndom, CB, Lufkin: Despite last week’s tough loss to The Woodlands the Panthers are still in line for a playoff berth regardless of what happens this weekend. Lufkin (7-2, 3-1) faces Conroe Oak Ridge and the only thing to be determined in this one is the top seed in the Division II bracket.
Bryant Jackson, S, Sulphur Springs: The Wildcats, the 2008 Division II state champions, have a very easy scenario when they face Hallsville Friday – the winner goes on to the playoffs and the loser is done for the season. Sulphur Springs (6-3, 2-3) has lost tough district games to Texas High, Longview and Marshall and now will hit the road in a true winner-take-all scenario.
