Having grown up watching his older brother Quentin Jammer
make plays as a defensive back for the Texas Longhorns, Angleton’s Quandre
Diggs has long dreamed about doing the same. Now he will have the chance to follow in his brother’s
footsteps with the news Thursday morning that he is the newest member of Texas’
2011 recruiting class having committed to Texas Wednesday night according to
ESPN.com’s Gerry Hamilton.
The 5-foot-10, 193-pound Diggs attended the Longhorns’
second Junior Day on Feb. 27 but did not nab a Longhorn offer at that time.
Diggs was told, as were the many potential defensive back prospects on campus
that day, the Texas staff would continue to evaluate the position throughout
the spring and make a decision at some point down the road.
Less than two weeks later, Diggs is now heading to Austin
and is excited about having the chance to fulfill a dream.
“Man, it’s really just a dream come true to commit to
Texas,” Diggs told Hamilton. “I’ve grown up watching the Texas Longhorns and
have loved those guys my whole life. Of course, my brother is a Texas Longhorn
playing in the NFL (Quentin Jammer) and I love being around all the guys that
have played at Texas and are playing at Texas now.”
Throughout his recruitment, Diggs noted he had developed
strong relationships with Texas defensive backs coach Duane Akina (who coached
Jammer as a senior) and his area recruiter Major Applewhite (who played with
Jammer at Texas from 1997-2001).
The sense of closeness and family was one thing that put
Texas on top for Diggs.
“The whole atmosphere was what I was looking for,” Diggs
said. “My family was real excited and they said “Hook ’Em.” That’s where my
whole family wanted me to go.”
The Texas offer was the 24th offer for Diggs who was also
courted by Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas A&M among many
others. Florida, Georgia and USC were all showing heavy interest with the
Trojans figuring to be offering very soon.
In addition to his Junior Day visit to Texas, Diggs was
invited to attend Junior Days at LSU and Oklahoma. His track schedule prevented
him from making it to either event.
While he figures to play defensive back at Texas, Diggs
said his future position is not set in stone.
“They offered me as an athlete and I’m going to go in and
compete and play wherever they need me,” Diggs said.
A verbal commitment to the Longhorns caps a big week for
Diggs as he was recently named to the 2011 Under Armour All-America Game. Diggs
is one of only three native Texans to be selected to the game and is the second
Longhorn commitment officially heading to Orlando as he joins Spring Westfield
defensive tackle Desmond Jackson.
As a junior Diggs helped lead Angleton to an 11-2 record and while
earning Greater Houston area Offensive Player of the Year honors from the
Houston Chronicle. Diggs posted 399 passing yards, 1,257 yards on the ground,
130 yards on just three kickoff returns and 15 total touchdowns while coming
away with three interceptions on defense.
