Mack Brown and wife Sally celebrate the win.

As Inside Texas was first to report on Sunday, Mack Brown will step down as the coach at the University of Texas after 16 years with the school.

According to several well placed sources close to the Athletic Department and the Board of Regents, the buyout, as we reported Monday, will be significantly higher than the $2.75 million buyout clause currently in Brown’s contract. Additionally, sources tell us that Mack will receive $1.3 million per year until 2020 to act as a liason and ambassador of the University. The timing of this announcement indicates that Nick Saban continues to be the only replacement target identified by the University of Texas power-brokers and Athletic Director Steve Patterson. The timing also suggests an announcement of a new head football coach could be imminent according to sources.
