This week, Texas quarterback commit Garrett Gilbert was named Gatorade National Player of the Year.

In 2009, the National Player of the Year will be suiting up for the Texas Longhorns.

Lake Travis senior QB Garrett Gilbert was named the top high school player in the nation this week. Gilbert is the first player from the state of Texas to win the award. The Texas commit has completed 849-of-1,304 passes for 11,918 yards and 129 touchdowns in his career.

But Gilbert's career is not done.

His team is still alive in the playoffs and looking for back-to-back state championships. Gilbert and the Cavs play in the Class 4A Division I semifinals against Friendswood on Saturday. Through 14 games this season, Gilbert has completed 256-of-372 passes for 4,231 yards and 48 touchdowns against just five INTs.

The selection process for the award is administered by ESPN RISE Magazine, which works with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of prep sports journalists to determine the state and national winners in each sport.

By winning the award. Gilbert is now a finalist for the Gatorade Male High School Athlete of the Year Award, to be presented at a special afternoon ceremony prior to The ESPY Awards in July. Gilbert, as well as four other Texas commitments, will play in 2009 Under Armour All-America Game on January 4th in Orlando.
