KATY — When I used to live in Houston, May was the beginning of the summer. It was sticky, nasty heat. So upon arriving to Taylor HS, I was pleasantly surprised by the cool breeze sweeping through the stadium a few miles off I-10.
The only hot thing I witnessed was the Mustangs defense, with prospects Max Wright, Ben Montgomery, Braedon Mowry, Andrew Coker, and Otito Ogbonnia. Their front 7 will be the staple of the 2017 Katy Taylor squad coming off a 9-3 6A Area quarterfinalist season.
It’s starts on the line. The sizes – Wright at 6’4, 280; Coker at 6’7, 335; Mowry at 6’4, 235; and Ogbonnia at 6’3, 265. That’s how you field a competitive team in the prospect-rich Houston region, with God given size.
It’s one factor that brought out over a dozen college coaches on the evening. Texas, Texas A&M, Alabama, Ole Miss, Baylor, Duke, Tulane, and UNLV were among the contingent on hand. All were there to find talent, mingle with fellow CFB coaching brethren, and see Mr. Wright.
