Since Tom Herman took the Texas job last November, the plight in Corby Meekins’ tight end room has been a topic of discussion. Now there’s a new, more positive topic in that room in the form of the nation’s No. 1 JUCO tight end.

Arizona Western College tight end Dominick Wood-Anderson committed to Texas today, choosing the Longhorns over offers from Alabama and Oregon, among others.

Dominick Wood-Anderson, JUCO – TE (2018)

How he fits at Texas: Arizona Western likes to use Anderson as an outside receiver, running routes down the field and catching tunnel screens, which is interesting because he’s 6-foot-5 and 245 pounds. He’s a legit route runner that knows how to get open enough outside for his QB to be able to push the ball out wide and hit him, which portends a wonderful future when he’s working against linebackers and safeties on the hash marks. He’s very willing as a blocker but currently has very little film in executing the wide variety of blocks he’d be asked to take on at Texas. If he can master those then he’s a very exciting prospect for what he can do as a flex tight end on passing plays. – IB

Coach says: I need to verify if this kid’s measurables are accurate because if he’s a legit 6’5 and north of 240 running the way he is, then he’s going to be a problem. The first clip on tape is him splitting the corner and the safety and hauling in a 51 yard touchdown with a nice over the shoulder catch. Safe to say he got my attention after that clip. He has tight end size and runs around on film like a wide receiver and despite being split a lot on tape, he also has clips of him lining up and getting his hands dirty as a blocker. It’s not extensive, but it at least shows he is capable and willing to block, so that’s certainly a plus.

How this affects Texas: Another Notebook, another potential TE. Maybe this is the one. DWA has a penchant for falling in love during visits. Alabama likes him. Oregon too. But this kid could come in and start Day 1. Texas wants two TEs in 2018’s class and they’ll get two TEs. DWA would be an absolute steal. Texas QB commit Cam Rising is helping here too. August 1st looks like the date. Still, it shows the diligence of the staff to turn over every rock for find a TE that can come in and contribute. – JW
