Alex Okafor: Busy Summer Drawing to a Close

Alex Okafor absolutely blew up in the playoffs last season, leading Pflugerville all the way to the state championship game. A few months later, Okafor gave his commitment to the Texas Longhorns. IT caught up with the state’s top defensive end to talk about his summer and upcoming senior season.
Pflugerville defensive end Alex Okafor has had a very busy summer, tackling summer school, the weight room and even work. With football season less than a month away, Okafor believes that his dedication has paid dividends on and off the football field.

“This summer, I decided to go to summer school so I could graduate early,” Okafor said. “I have been putting in a lot of work in the classroom and the weight room. I also have a job at JCPenney. So, I’ve been doing one of those three things all summer long.”

“I feel more aggressive, quicker and stronger than I was last year,” Okafor said. “I put in a lot of work and hopefully it will pay off on the field.”

Okafor made it clear that pilling up huge stats was not on the top of his priority list. He simply wants to perform at a higher level than he did as a junior and help his team get back to the state finals.

“I think we can return to the championship game. We have eight starters coming back on defense and only one on offense, but defense wins championships. As long as the offense continues to get better week after week, we should have a great chance to get back and hopefully win it.”

Okafor traveled to Austin with the majority of Texas’ 2009 class during June for summer camp. He has already established good relationships with several of his future teammates.

“I was pretty cool to meet all of the recruits and see how they feel about Texas. We all get along,” Okafor said.

“I’ve know Calvin (Howell) since before he committed,” Okafor added. “Marcus Davis, I talk to him and Dominique Jones a lot. Those are the three I text pretty frequently.”

His fellow commitments aren’t the only prospects that Okafor keeps in touch with. He also texts one of Texas’ top targets as well.

“I’ve been talking to Jamarkus (McFarland),” Okafor said. “I text him once or twice a month. I’m pushing him to come to Texas, but I’m not trying to force anything on him. He is going to make the decision that is right for him when the time comes.”
