San Antonio Warren DT Calvin Howell made his second visit to the 40 Acres this past weekend. The 6-4, 280-pound defensive tackle returned to Austin because he wanted to make sure that someone closely involved in his recruitment could have a chance to meet the Texas coaches and came away with a much clearer picture on when he’s going to make his decision.
Calvin Howell is making a list and, when it comes to Texas, checking it twice.
The talented defensive tackle from Earl Warren High School in San Antonio visited the Longhorns on their second junior day, back on February 24th and received a scholarship offer from Mack Brown. Howell walked away impressed and decided he wanted to make a second visit to Texas so that someone who’s closely advising him on his collegiate decision could also meet Brown and the coaching staff.
“I wanted my dad to check out Texas,” said Howell. “He’s very involved in my recruitment. He’s really supportive.”
Howell returned to the UT campus on Saturday again and to further familiarize himself with the program and coaching staff.
“It went good. I watched practice, chilled with the coaches, all that,” said Howell.
He wasn’t able to get to Texas until 3 p.m. because he had an SAT test in morning, but enjoyed the time he spend in Austin. Howell reported to Inside Texas that the Horns solidified themselves in his top spot.
“I’ve always liked Texas,” said Howell. “It’s just a real cool place.”
After Texas, his two favorite schools are LSU and Oklahoma, but they’re not the only ones he’s considering. Howell holds offers from Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, LSU, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and TCU.
Howell said he’ll make his decision in relatively short order.
“I’m going to make my decision right in the middle of spring football,” said Howell.
But first he’s got a visit to Oklahoma scheduled. Howell also plans on making it back to Austin again on March 29th for the Longhorns’ spring game.
