San Antonio Warren defensive tackle Calvin Howell was in Austin to see Texas’ annual spring game and told Inside Texas the Horns are his No. 1 school. Given that, why did he choose to wait instead of commit, what school does he still want to see and when will Texas fans find out about his decision?
Calvin Howell has a Texas offer and the 6-4, 280-pound defensive tackle lists Texas as his No. 1 school.
So, why no commitment from Howell when he made his way to Austin on Saturday for Texas’ spring game?
“I most definitely want to wait until my parents can be there,” said Howell.
Due to a schedule conflict, Howell’s parents were unable to make it to Austin for the Longhorn’s spring game. Howell instead brought five of his best friends to check out the UT campus with him. But waiting for his mother and father to meet with Mack Brown again is only part of Howell’s decision to delay his commitment decision.
“I’m going to go see the Oklahoma spring game on April 12th. I still want to see that,” said Howell.
Howell clarified, however, that the Longhorns still have the top spot.
“Texas is my No. 1,” said Howell. “Texas is mind-blowing every time I’m go up there.”
Because Texas, OU and other top schools have been pursuing the talented DT, he’s become a hot commodity in recruiting, but Howell said he’s made sure to remain humble because he may be a big fish now, but he’s going to among other great athletes when he’s playing collegiate ball.
“After I get to college, I’m going to have to start over,” said Howell. “Got to leave high school behind and earn it again.”
Howell plans on making his decision before the start of spring ball at Warren, which begins in early May. He also mentioned that wherever he decides to go, he plans on making his commitment in person at the school of his choice with both of his parents present.
