Are there any Juco defensive players who could help stabilize the back 7, or do we have total faith in the development and improvement of the players on the roster?
Talent and numbers in the back seven isn't the issue, the staff probably has faith in itself to develop them. If not, it's the wrong staff.

longshot hypothetical...say somehow the defense gets "fixed" and charlie stays as the playcaller on defense or whatever.

vance moves to db coach. is he going to go recruit anyone worth a ****? a db coach is normally a plus/plus recruiter.
say they move em to db coach and can jennings...what position coach do they go for? do they get an s/t coordinator and get him to help with the lb's or some ****? or is it some thing where they have one coach safeties and one coach corners?

on the other side of the ball do they get rid of williams so they can promote sowder?

what does anthony johnson do recruiting wise? haven't heard a peep about him or jennings and this was pre-bed****ting

UT's last regular season game is 11/25 so that makes for an early transition IF it gets to that. That would be a good thing with all the early enrollees. The new guy would need face time with the early enrollee prospects, the guys like Hines, Browning, JK, etc.

I wouldn't be concerned no, because we don't know if it will get to that, and Texas has an extra week to work with. Plus, as I've detailed, Fenves has his house in order. He'll have a plan.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I continue to support Coach Strong, and truly hope no change is made. That said the programs success is my number one priority. With that in mind I have been playing what if for awhile now. Best senario is Haggar's just win out.

Curious as to why you think Williams is can worthy, if you do.
i don't know either way. how is he as a recruiter?

it seems to be the wr's have been pretty good but it's tough to tell if that's because of sterlin/the offense or if he's had a big impact as well. we know that sowder is probably the guy sterlin would've hired if it was up to him.

Would you give Demarco a look at RB? Since our running scheme is centered around big, strong North/South running instead of speed, his physical nature would be a plus. I understand the need for inside linebackers but I just feel like his attitude at the running back position would be special.

What are your thoughts on the current odds that we land Browning, Little, Marvin Wilson, Alex Leatherwood, Hines, or any other 5 stars?

If you retain Bedford as a position coach part of the bargain is you demand he hits the recruiting trail. He would need to be held to a higher standard as a recruiter from position coach than coordinator. Gilbert doesn't offer much as a recruiter, either.

Promoting Sowder would be if you felt you weren't getting quality teaching from a system standpoint. I'm not sure you can make that case at this time but maybe that is an internal issue. I haven't heard it, though.

Man, I never hear Johnson's name for anything, recruiting or coaching. (looks wistfully to Joey McGuire)

Eric I mentioned one of our RBs to you last spring Lazarus (Chance) Fisher. Not sure if he has his senior hudl stuff up or available. I know you haven't seen him in person to look at physique, etc. Not sure what school could use his skill set. Very good accerlation, change of direction with enough strength. Trying to find him a great place to play.

136 rushes - 1113 yards - 10 rushing TDs
30 receptions - 491 yards - 4 TDs

It's impossible to know because how the season plays out will have an affect.

If Texas goes 8-4, per preseason expectations, I expect them to land Browning, Little, and Wilson. I don't see Leatherwood happening. Hines is a crap shoot at this point. I don't think he's a lock to A&M like some others do.

Texas can still land Little, Browning, and Wilson at 7-5 but it will be tougher. It's not just record specific, they want to see positive trajectory and a reason to believe the program is on the right track.

No, I think he offers more as a LB than as a RB and linebacker is as big of a need. If this offense used a FB, then I might consider a switch to offense, but it doesn't.

If Strong sticks, think they land Browning, Little, Wilson, and Dobbins.

Might land half even if Strong doesn't.

Hard to answer in October.

I remember. He's definitely going to play somewhere.

Is he hearing from anyone yet, regardless of level?

@Eric Nahlin some weeks back you mentioned that you were going to do a thread on UTSA recruiting. I saw a tweet the other day that said that their class was approaching the top 50, which is impressive if true. They haven't ever cracked top 100 previously. With UTEP coming up Saturday, they are currently sitting at 3-3. If somehow they can become bowl eligible in Wilson's first year, how high could they rise realistically? TIA.

Right.

Loading up on bread, basically, before the season makes me think even Sumlin didn't anticipate a 6-0 start.
That's what I wanted to ask you guys about, should we secretly be glad the ags got off to a hot start which now guarantees Sumlin will be back next year? Also, with all the offseason reports of them being a dumpster fire culturally, has that magically been remedied? I have to think they come crashing back down next season once they lose Miles Garrett to the pros.

I'll break them down at the end of the season.

64th by composite which is still good.

Part of that is inflated because of Steward the DE commit who has some off the field questions.

Lots of corners, including Jaylon Lane and Tay'lor Perry. I've also heard good things about Vance Vallair and you can't go wrong with a CB from John Tyler.

McCleod at TE is also a nice get for you guys. He's the type who would go to Boise State and fare very well. TE Michael Goff is another steal.

Typical of schools like UTSA, they need to find help across the lines. Quality big men are much harder to find at that level.

He either lacked confidence in his team, his ability to recruit, or both. I'm going to address it in the Helmet Boyd thread on this forum a bit later today.

Hoping I can find some time in the next couple weeks to catch a few high school games in CenTex area. I don't have a schedule on me, but any "can't miss" games coming up the rest of this month out here? Either elite players, Texas targets, or any other criteria deemed worthy? Anyone can feel free to chime in with feedback. Thanks.

My son is currently in the 8th Grade, and he is a multisport athlete,(Above Average Football player, Excellent Basketball Player ,Above Average Track)He has a chance to be on JV both football and basketball as a freshman. HIS goal is to obtain a scholarship to continue playing sports in college. What steps should he take this summer as he enters into HS, to start getting looks? Is it more film, more camps a little bit of everything?
As a dad that has raised a son that is going to sign his LOI (GOLF) in 3 weeks to the SEC, I have learned a lot throughout the process. Some things we got right and some we didn't.
I will add to - that while playing other sports is awesome to help build a well rounded athlete. Depending on his goal of college schools, if he wants to play at a school like Texas or anywhere in the B12 or the SEC , he will almost have to be a specialist. Concentrate on 1 sport while also playing other sports. Obviously cross fit training is going to help in multiple sports.

You can't wait to start building relationships with college coaches.
Keep in mind, coaches can NOT call you back, return a text or an email until Sept. 1st of his junior year - per the NCAA. So most of all of the leg work has to be done by you.
Go to camps, send emails, go to their schools websites and get the coaches phone #, etc. - 1 tip that helped us was to call and leave messages that stated I am going to call at a certain time next Wednesday evening, a lot of times they would answer that call. Start contacting college football, basketball, and track coaches ASAP. Let them know when you get on campus you would like to meet and see each coach and their facilities. They will know they have a excellent athlete on their hands and will hope he chooses their sport. College coaches LOVE a kid that excels in one sport but also lettered in another sport. Also choose several schools from different sizes, I have seen where several baseball players that wanted to play for Georgia, or GA.Tech but didn't quit make it there and now they are not playing at all due to they never reached out to other schools. When they certainly had D1 talent and could have been starting for a lot of other colleges. Also when you are building these relationships, don't only reach out when you have excelled in a game, they understand what an athlete goes through, the ups and downs. I have taught my son to always look in the mirror and to be honest to himself, if he is not honest to the one looking back how can he be honest to his parents, teachers, coaches, etc. He knows if he has done the work to be prepared to compete. To only worry about the things you can control and take an honest assessment to where he needs to improve.

My son played multiple sports - AAU basketball - Baseball he played middle infield, catcher, he pitched 3 straight complete game shutouts for the state championship (McClyde don't worry he never threw over 70 pitches in a game - only fastballs & changeups - and had several days off in between starts). I asked my son which sport and why, I would ask my son if he had only 1 day left to play for the love of the game would he - go hit in a cage, hit balls on a driving range, or play basketball in the driveway. With either answer he needed to love it unconditionally due to the commitment of practicing or working at in some way all the time - without a parent or coach telling him he needs to.

One night my son, when he was 11, while leaving a basketball tournament where the ref was a factor in the outcome said "this is why he is going to play golf". I asked why due to we haven't talked golf in 3 months. He stated that he controls the outcome, he doesn't need a ref's whistle or an umpires call. He went on to say that if he comes in with a score it is HIS score - good or bad - and nobody can take it from him. Doesn't matter what car he gets into or house he goes to. I had to remind myself he had just turned 11. Now he has gone on to win over 50 tournaments, set a couple of course records, shoots in the mid 60's routinely, and has now started his senior year in high school. Funny thing is he chose to go play basketball in the driveway.

I know this is long but hope it helps. If you or anyone has any questions you can PM me. I would love to know your kids name to watch and root for.

Excellent. Get Wilson, Browning, and Chaisson added to what we have, and we can dominate the line of scrimmage in Big 12 play for years to come.
Adding those war daddies on that side of the ball is part of the reason I feel Texas can still land Hines. I'm sure Hines won't mind being the man but I also think playing with the best will become more attractive.
