What's a reasonable cost to replace a central air unit with furnace (outdoor unit and evaporator)? I've seen the national average is $5000, but some guy in Dallas wants to sell my mom a $10000 system.

It's an American Standard, SEER 16, ten year warranty. But I don't know if it's really necessary to spend that much. Could be wrong, though.

$5800 a few years ago....I think 3 years now for one in Conroe. $5900-$6k for one at my mom's house in Abilene earlier this year or late last year.

Depends on the size of the house, whether or not it has functioning ducts or has to be replaced and the size of the unit itself.
Here is a source article that might help.
(Site has a lot of info on different requirements and costs)
Best advise is to find a reputable contractor and negotiate the price based on needs.
One of my buddies is a HVAC guy here in Knoxville, TN and I called hi for this info....Hope it helps.

You haven't included the most pertinent info which is the tonnage of the unit, i.e., cooling power. But 16 seer is quite efficient. $10k is probably right for that in the Metroplex if you're in the 5-7.5 tom range. Maybe look at a 12-13 seer range.
