The state of Texas is full of talent at the quarterback position in the 2009 class, and Lake Travis’ Garrett Gilbert is one of the best. Gilbert has been busy with seven-on-sevens and summer camps since school ended. Despite visiting several schools, the Lake Travis quarterback says he isn’t focused on recruiting just yet. He is only working on getting better.
“I’m focusing on my season first and trying to win a state championship,” Garrett Gilbert said when asked if he had any favorites at this point in time. “After that, I will start focusing on recruiting.”
Gilbert may not be focused on recruiting right now, but he has gone to a few summer camps during the last month.
“Yes sir,” Gilbert said when asked if he attended camp at the University of Texas. “It was a lot of fun. It was just a one day camp.”
“I also went to a Tennessee football camp a couple of weeks ago. I had a lot of fun up there,” Gilbert added.
Gilbert talked about what he is going to look for in a school when recruiting picks up.
“First of all, I’m going to look at academics. Secondly, I want to play for a winning program or a tradition program with good coaches,” Gilbert said.
Gilbert put together an outstanding sophomore campaign pulling in first team all-district and district player of the year honors. Despite having such a successful season, Gilbert passed a lot of the credit on to his teammates and coaches.
“I would have to say that we’ve got a lot of great receivers who get open on every play. It just makes my job a lot easier,” Gilbert said. “A great coaching staff also makes my job a lot easier.”
