Yesterday’s news of Jake Ehlinger’s sudden passing sent shockwaves throughout the Longhorn community and campus. We’d be lying if we didn’t admit to needing a standing 8 count.
As you can tell from the outpouring of friends and teammates on social media, each one had a fondness for the happy-go-lucky walk-on.
Jake, 20, grew up in the shadows of big brother Sam Ehlinger. For many, that would lead to a contentious sibling rivalry as the “other” brother seeks his own identity. Not with Jake; comfortable being his own person, he embraced being Sam’s little brother. The balls on this guy to show up at UT and be himself earned him the outpouring you saw that accompanied the tragic news.
At 5-foot-11, 220 pounds, the Westlake linebacker had a stellar senior campaign tallying 106 tackles, two sacks, nine TFL, and three TDs, culminating in District MVP honors. It was an announcement that Jake was a pretty damn good football player in his own right. That season led to the opportunity to not only reunite with Sam, but also fulfill his own dream of representing the University of Texas.
“Both have dreamed of playing football at UT since they were little boys playing football in backyard,” Jena Ehlinger said. “Now, they get to do it together. Just amazing.”
