Texas-Arkansas game rescheduled for Sept. 27. Game time TBA.
With forecasts of Hurricane Ike calling for severe weather throughout much of the state and in Austin this weekend, Texas’ football game with Arkansas, scheduled for this Saturday at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, has been postponed. The game has been rescheduled for Saturday, Sept. 27th at Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. Kickoff time and television will be announced at a later date.
“We have been monitoring this situation since Sunday and, at this time, feel confident this is the right thing to do,” Longhorn Men’s Athletics Director DeLoss Dodds said. “A football game becomes less important when you are dealing with the safety of the people of Texas.”
Earlier Wednesday evening, after indicating his staff and players were preparing as if there would be a game Saturday, Mack Brown said, “The worst thing any of us can do is expect it not to come and someone not be safe and protected.”
“As we worked closely with the University of Texas to consider the options, the safety and welfare of the student-athletes, coaches and fans was everyone’s top priority,” Arkansas Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Jeff Long said. “In considering all of the factors, both institutions felt that postponing the game was the appropriate course of action. We appreciate the cooperation of the University of Texas and the various state and federal authorities in monitoring the situation and working together to make this decision. With this decision, we can now turn our focus to the safety and well-being of the citizens of Texas and others affected by Hurricane Ike.”
