Senior defensive lineman Jacoby Jones announced Tuesday he would use the year of extra eligibility granted by the NCAA to play another season at Texas.
Jones, a member of Texas’ 2019 class out of Butler C.C. in El Dorado, Kan., played in nine games during the 2020 season. He missed the season opener versus UTEP, but recorded 29 tackles, two tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks in the remaining games.
Texas is in need of depth on the edge of the defensive line, and Jones’ return provides an experienced defender at the position for Steve Sarkisian and Pete Kwiatkowski for the 2021 season.
Jones is one of several Longhorns taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility as a result of the pandemic, joining Cade Brewer, Denzel Okafor, Tope Imade, and Brenden Schooler.
Jones is a native of St. Louis, Mo.
