Texas senior and 2018 Big 12 defensive lineman of the year Charles Omenihu was selected in the fifth round of the NFL Draft by the Houston Texans.
“I’m so blessed to be drafted by a great organization like the Houston Texans,” Omenihu said. “I’m just ready to get in, get to work, be a sponge to the veterans and guys who have been there before me and just make my way and be a huge part for what’s coming in Houston.”
Omenihu played in 51 games at Texas and started 33 in his four-year career. He set career bests his senior year in games played, solo tackles, assisted tackles, total tackles, TFLs, and sacks. He lead the Big 12 in sacks in 2019 with 9.5 on his way to taking first team All-Big 12 honors in addition to defensive lineman of the year.
A member of the 2015 class, Omenihu was ranked as a composite three-star. He participated in the 2015 Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl prior to his Longhorn career and in the 2019 Senior Bowl following it.
The Rowlett native had an opportunity to enter the 2018 NFL Draft but chose to remain for his standout senior season.
Omenihu is first Longhorn to be selected in the 2019 NFL Draft.
