ORLANDO, Fla. — Mammoth offensive lineman and Texas commitment Mason Walters (Wolfforth, Texas/Frenship) certainly passed the ‘look test’ as he walked around the hotel lobby after practice for the Under Armour All-American Game.
The 6-foot-7 and 285-pound Walters also looked very good on the practice field at the Walt Disney Wide World of Sports Complex earlier in the day on Saturday.
Walters worked at both center and left tackle. He expects to spend some time at each position in the nationally televised game on ESPN on Sunday night. The experience should come in handy when Walters gets to Austin.
“I’ve played center the last three years, but I think (the Texas coaching staff) will move me out to tackle,” Walters said. “But if I don’t move to tackle I’ll just work hard at center. That’s the only way to be successful.”
Walters is the No. 1 offensive tackle prospect in the ESPNU rankings and the No. 15 overall prospect on the ESPNU 150.
Walters, who estimated his scholarship offer total to have been close to 30, committed to the Longhorns in late March.
“I definitely haven’t had any second thoughts,” he said. “I couldn’t ask for better coaches. Coach (Mack) Brown runs a classy program. He is a classy person. It is something I want to be around the rest of my life.”
Walters has already graduated from Frenship and will start classes at Texas Jan. 16. He said he hasn’t talked much with Brown about whether or not he will redshirt his first season with the Longhorns.
“I’d like to make an impact my first year,” Walters said. “But redshirting has some benefits. But I’m a competitor. They told me they will evaluate me when it gets closer to the season. They will make the call.”
In the meantime, Walters is having a great time finishing up his high school football career.
“The (Under Armour) practices have gone pretty well,” he said. “It’s been kind of relaxed, but everyone is working hard. That’s what I’m doing, working hard. It has definitely been what I expected. It’s been an even playing field. Everyone down here is a good player.”
