Lake Travis quarterback Garrett Gilbert gave his verbal pledge to Texas on Thursday afternoon and it didn’t take long for one of his high school teammates to follow suite. Offensive tackle Paden Kelley received an offer from Mack Brown and company during his junior day visit and is now committed to play football at the University of Texas.
“I can inform you that Texas offered me and I did commit,” Paden Kelley said.
Kelley grew up a die hard Texas fan. He was a frequent visitor during football season and had the Longhorns on the top of his list from the get go.
“Every since I was a little kid, I wanted to be a Longhorn. I’ve gone to every single home game since I was too young to remember. I just love the setting and the environment down there on campus, and I love the coaching staff. They treat all of their players like family and open their arms to every single player that comes through the university,” Kelley said.
“Texas has always been number one on my list, and I can say that now. The fact that Garrett (Gilbert) committed there is just a huge bonus. I’ve wanted to play with him for a really long time. I’ve been his left tackle since third grade, so it’s really cool that we are going to go ahead and play together on the next level,” Kelley said.
Kelley is the prototypical prospect that the Texas Longhorns look for and Mack Brown confirmed that during a chat with Kelley this morning.
“He just said that I come from a really good family. He knows me and my family pretty well. He knows that I come from a really good team and that I have good character and good grades. He said that I had what it takes to be offered a scholarship,” Kelley said.
