WINTER PARK, FL — Because of a glitch in the Texas Football recruiting mailing list, Jordan Pouncey had been receiving mail from Austin for a year. Well, call it fate when he committed to Texas today.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound wideout from the Sunshine State joins the Longhorns a month after de-committing from Notre Dame. He chose UT over Miami, Tennessee, and the Fighting Irish.

His Recruiting Notebook and evaluation:

How he fits at Texas: Pouncey is your prototypical Florida skill player, a really good athlete who plays the game hard and is faster on the field then in timed measurements. He looks like a 4.6 kid but the acceleration he gets in his first few steps is elite and he got a lot of carries out of the backfield to make the most of it. With training he might be good at winning deep on routes but he projects very obviously as a player that can catch at a standstill on a screen or snag route and then turn up-field and pick up chunk yardage after the catch. His size and acceleration could fit very well in the Herman passing game. – IB

Coach says: Tall, long striding receiver that possesses some surprising elusiveness and some nice burst for his size. Can eat up yards in a hurry with his stride and displays some nice vision and cuts as a runner. Looks like he has the ability to be a YAC machine once he gets the ball in his hands. Good athlete whose athleticism translated to running back and as a return man and was impressive at both.

How this affects Texas: The way Pouncey and Texas got to know each other is a funny story. Accidentally put on UT’s mailing list last spring, close to former UT staffer Andrew Sowder, hit it off with WR coach Drew Mehringer, and was blown away on his visit to Texas. Each time I speak to him, his love for the Longhorns only grows. His girlfriend’s family built up Austin and then UT exceeded expectations. He’s been trending Miami even before he de-committed from Notre Dame, but hearing The U might possibly be going in a different direction. If true, this kid is Longhorn on NSD. – JW
