Cloudy skies yet again, but a slight breeze and slightly cooler temperatures made for the most enjoyable weather of the weekend. Sunday was the first of the three days that the team put pads on. There were no offensive or defensive team drills today, so there was no way to tell if things had changed in terms of depths. But a few stood out. Check out Sunday's practice report.
Today is the eve of the last game of the season. You don't want to play those this early in bowl season but it's better than missing bowl season altogether. While you're reading this from the warm confines of your home or office, or your home office (me), the team is preparing like it always does the day before a game:
HOUSTON -- Texas wanted one more defensive back for the 2018 class. So they got the best in-state. Houston Lamar 5-star CB Anthony Cook committed to Texas today. The 6-foot-0, 180-pound corner chose the Longhorns over LSU, Ohio State, and over 30 other offers. He joins teammates D'Shawn Jamison and Al'Vonte Woodard in UT's Class of 2018. Current Longhorns, Holton Hill and John Bonney, are also alums from Lamar HS a.k.a. DB High.
Texas is going to sign a talented group of players on Wednesday but a full class it doesn't make. For this class to truly be a success (on paper) it will have to continue rounding out rough edges by adding on the lines, at linebacker, and by landing a supplementary explosive athlete or two. In my years of doing percentages this certainly won't rival some of the most optimistic efforts. Perhaps some chickens are about to come home to roost due to tardy overtures from the staff? We’ll see. Plus quotes after the OV weekend in Austin. All in the Scoop.
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas and by that I mean NSD1. The Texas staff has put together quite the haul, even if players who are considered foregone conclusions to sign are often overlooked. It's like when you snooped around the house looking for your presents in advance of them being wrapped. It's not quite as fun when you know what you're going to get, but sometimes it's nice to remove anxiety out of the equation. Heaven forbid you don't get that Tonka truck defensive tackle.
