AUSTIN -- Texas coach Charlie Strong landed recruits in February, June, July, and August in the Class of 2016. That's one heck of a recruiting cycle. Manor 4-star LB Erick Fowler is the final piece, has been cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse and will enroll today at Texas, per his father and a source close to the team. He's the perfect Fox, so Big 12 quarterbacks are now the prey.
It's long been documented Charlie Strong has been a victim of his initial poor hiring decisions as well as an unexplainable run of bad luck. This offseason began with what appeared like more of the same with the initial embarrassment of the offensive coordinator search. In the end, Strong was able to hire his number two choice - Sterlin Gilbert - and after seeing an aggressive and exciting brand of offense in the spring game, as well has hope at the quarterback position, I don't know anyone who would trade Gilbert for the first choice.
Who knew the month of June would be hotbed recruiting season? I loved Charlie Strong’s strategy back in February: “Take the defensive tackles, all of them.” I don’t think that’s a direct quote but it’s essentially what happened which is why I personally designed this celebratory photo — enjoy. I had no clue there’d be even more beef coming to the 40 Acres on the offensive side of the ball after signing day.
AUSTIN -- Maybe it was meant to be. It almost happened before National Signing Day back in February. Senior 5-star offensive lineman Patrick Hudson considered flipping from Baylor to Texas a week before NSD. Last month, after the problems in Waco boiled to the surface, he requested his release. Well, today Hudson decided to attend Texas. The 6-foot-5, 325-pound mauler chose UT over OU, A&M, Baylor, and others. Hudson is the 4th Baylor pledge to flip, joining WR Devin Duvernay inking with Texas on Wednesday, JP Urquidez and Donovan Duvernay on Saturday.
AUSTIN -- UT's Class of 2016 keeps growing. And another Baylor signee is headed to the state capitol. Copperas Cove's JP Urquidez committed to Charlie Strong and the Longhorns today. Urquidez originally signed with Baylor, but requested a release from his LOI after the turmoil in Waco and Art Briles' departure.
We don't normally write lists because of the lazy #content nature of them, but doing so is an effective way of associating expectations on the newly arrived freshman football players. It's also a good way to have our opinions out there for all to see. When Gerald Wilbon is Big 12 Newcomer of the Year you may hesitate to say you knew it all along if we can revert back to this thread to verify that very bold declaration.
