David Pierce’s No. 12 Longhorn baseball team travels to Palo Alto, Calif. this weekend to face the No. 6 Stanford Cardinal. The Longhorns and Cardinal have matched up every year since 1998. Late Texas head coach Augie Garrido and former Stanford head coach Mark Marquess both played similar styles of ball, and with Garrido originally from Northern California, a series between the two programs was a perfect match.
AUSTIN -- Sophomore starter Bryce Elder was instrumental helping LSU score its first run of the game in the top of the first. He allowed a single, recorded an error, and had two wild pitches to help LSU to an early 1-0 lead.
AUSTIN -- With LSU visiting Austin this weekend, Texas head coach David Pierce wanted to cycle some young arms through Wednesday’s game while still trying to defeat visiting UTSA. That task appeared to be achievable after Texas jumped to a 6-0 lead in the third inning.
Through four innings, Sam Houston State starter Seth Ballew faced the minimum. Texas sophomore Zach Zubia was the Longhorns’ only baserunner after he reached on a single, but he was quickly erased in a double play from the next hitter.
University of Texas Vice President and director of athletics Chris Del Conte considers Texas the hunter, not the hunted. As an athletic program that claims to be one of the country’s elite, student-athletes and coaches that don burnt orange know that opponents relish the opportunity to knock the Longhorns off their pedestal.
When the day began at Disch-Falk Field, the focus was on the past. Former head coach Augie Garrido joined Bibb Falk, Billy Disch, and Cliff Gustafson as Texas head coaches to have their busts placed outside Texas’ home diamond. Longhorn athletic director Chris Del Conte even joked with current head coach David Pierce that maybe one day his bust would join the legendary five.
