AUSTIN -- During rivalry games, players who let the emotions of the game interfere with their play often come out on the losing end. Whether the No. 17 Texas A&M Aggies were playing too high or low emotionally may not be determined, but the multiple Aggie errors in the Longhorns’ fourth and fifth innings produced enough opportunities for Texas to take advantage.
Since late November 2011, the Texas vs Texas A&M rivalry has yet to take place on a football field. It has taken place online in arguments between UT and A&M fans, on the cover of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, and in various press conference swipes from coaches on both sides over the years.
Prior to Sunday, Texas had gone almost two seasons between weekend sweeps. With a sloppy 10-5 victory over UCLA, Texas ended that run and completed a five win week before the beginning of a week with multiple in-state rivals on the schedule.
On the heels of a 5-4 come-from-behind victory, the conditions in Austin tried to put a damper on both the scheduled game and the Texas offense. Though the sky was crying, Longhorn bats were not as a big offensive first inning and a combined two-hitter from the staff helped Texas win 5-2 and take the series from the UCLA Bruins.
Sat in the stands tonight to soak up some nice Austin weather and to just get a feel for the Disch. Sometimes I feel like I get too caught up in the numbers rather than what's actually going on in the game. Here are some quick thoughts I've got from sitting down the left field line.
Texas followed up a 9-0 Tuesday victory over Richmond with the rare (for Texas) Wednesday victory as the Horns clobbered Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 15-0 in a game that, while originally scheduled for a full nine innings, ended after seven in a run rule. Senior Jon Malmin earned the win in relief following a dominating start from sophomore Nick Kennedy.
