Texas recovered from a spell where it lost three of four with a weekend sweep of Cal State Fullerton. The Longhorns won 6-1 on Friday, 4-3 on Saturday, and 8-4 on Sunday with the sweep-clinching win powered by home runs from Austin Todd and Peyton Powell.
Texas overcame 5.1 innings of no-hit pitching from Cal State Fullerton starter Tanner Bibee with a six-run seventh inning. Eric Kennedy and Murphy Stehly added a RBI apiece via singles, Eric Kennedy drove in two with a double, and DJ Petrinsky set off Smokey the Cannon with his two-run shot to left field. Dawson Merryman earned the win in relief for a 6-1 Texas victory.
Thirteen games into the season, Texas head coach David Pierce is well aware he needs more production from whoever he plays at second base. Brenden Dixon, Lance Ford, and Murphy Stehly received chances to play the spot, but thus far the position has offered little at the plate.
HOUSTON -- Prior to 2019, David Pierce’s resume only included success. He won five regular season conference championships in his first seven seasons as a head coach, including one at each of his three stops. He reached Omaha in 2018 with the Longhorns and was honored as Baseball America’s College Coach of the Year.
So far, Texas hasn’t faced a difficult schedule. In early season RPI rankings via Warren Nolan, Texas has played teams ranked 257th, 140th, 168th, 78th, and 64th. This weekend, they’ll face LSU, Arkansas, and Missouri in Houston during the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic at Minute Maid Park.
AUSTIN -- Of Texas’ first nine opponents, Sam Houston State was the toughest. SHSU was the only Longhorn foe thus far ranked in the top 100 of the NCAA’s RPI rankings. The Bearkats still met the same fate, a loss, as everyone else David Pierce’s ballclub has played this year.
