We’ve reached the “Todd Orlando’s playground” portion of the 2018 football schedule. The upcoming slate goes at Oklahoma State, West Virginia, at Texas Tech, Iowa State, at Kansas. All of these teams are built from the Air Raid save for Iowa State and they all want to throw the ball down the field first and foremost...
What's the best way to get recruits to watch OU football? Give them tickets to a Texas game. This year is the Sooners' turn to host and there will be a few common targets in attendance. More important than who is at the game is the outcome. The virtuous circle of winning begetting elite recruits begetting winning would get a nice boost if Texas could pull out the win. If this team sticks to its profile of playing 'up' to its competition we should be in for a dandy 24 hours time.
It wasn't pretty, but football in Manhattan, Kansas rarely is. Texas jumped out to a commanding 19-0 lead, then held on down the final stretch for the 19-14 win at Bill Snyder Family Stadium on Saturday. Here are my Five Quick Thoughts following UT's win over Kansas State.
AUSTIN, Tx -- Following two uninspiring performances to open the season, Texas decided to turn it on. And did they ever. UT dominated in all three phases of the game as the Longhorns knocked off No. 22 Southern California, 37-14 in front of a record 103, 507 fans on an electrically charged Saturday night at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium.
Practice today was at the Wright Whitaker Sports Complex, or the intramural fields at 51st as most know them. The facilities were updated last year, and Tom Herman utilized the fields last preseason camp as an opportunity for the players to play in a different location and to change things up a bit. Today the Longhorns had helmets and shoulder pads on.
AUSTIN -- Over previous seasons Texas hasn’t been affected by the targeting penalty. Yet, before the 2018 season begins it already has. After being ejected in the victory over Missouri in the Texas Bowl for targeting, senior linebacker Anthony Wheeler will miss the first half at Maryland. Wheeler is most likely the starter at the Mac linebacker spot in defensive coordinator Todd Orlando’s defense, but he won’t be for the first half.
Ideally a team pretty much knows who they are going into fall camp. If you read my recent piece on Gary Patterson’s defensive development at TCU, you’ll notice that he goes into fall camp with gameplans for every opponent and his goal that fall is more about installing them than experimenting to sort out what will work. The spring is for figuring out who your team will be that season, the fall is for instilling a strategy to maximize that team’s strengths in the coming year.
