Texas broke ground Saturday on Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium’s new south end zone facility with local and state politicians, university leadership, prolific donors, and the faces of the athletic department on hand to celebrate their vision of Texas having the best football facility in the country.
University of Texas president Greg Fenves rarely talks athletics with the media. His position of athletics being the front porch of the university means that while it is outside of his expertise, he recognizes the extreme importance of Longhorn athletics to the school, fans and alumni. So when he speaks on the subject publicly, it’s with good reason.
Since DeLoss Dodds retired in October of 2013 the Texas athletic department has been run by two entirely disparate personalities in the distant and prickish Steve Patterson and affable former letterman Mike Perrin. Patterson took what few remaining BBs were left in the box and loaded them into buckshot for a weekend, non-hunting season dove hunt. Those little bastards had it coming.
AUSTIN -- Tom Herman's been on the job little more than one month and, already, he’s defending his offensive coordinator as well as his grocery list. Apparently there weren’t enough vegetables in Hermann’s shopping cart Wednesday, according to tongue-in-cheek social media posts.
You probably gathered that if you watched the body language in the press conference and the deference showed to Fenves when asked the larger Who, What, Why questions. Fenves has minimal knowledge of football, but he's a very bright guy with a good understanding of leadership and organizational management. He also consulted a number of advisors - former players, coaches, successful alumni who have been a big part of the football program - to help him understand the landscape so that he could create a proper framework for his decision.
Tom Herman has been here before. Everybody wanted him, but he’s one of us. And when the hottest commodity in college football was introduced Sunday as Texas’ 30th head coach, it wasn’t just a promotion for the 41-year wunderkind; it was a homecoming.
Thursday evening, after weeks of keeping our cool while others repeatedly broke their hollowed-out tooth cyanide capsule, we finally felt the coaching search pressure a bit based on some very reliable information. And damn am I pissed about that because thanks to some quick action I once again think UT is back to neutral with Herman's car headed downhill to Austin, provided the UT admin doesn't set up any spike-strips.
