AUSTIN - On a gorgeous sunny day at DKR, the Texas Longhorns held their Student Appreciation Day and first scrimmage of the Spring. While the crowd was small, the enthusiasm was large as people got to see outside of an expanded social media contingent what Tom Herman's been cooking in his laboratory since his arrival in December. There were big plays, potentially important injuries, and big hits. Physicality was in full effect.
This week in the Scoop, we talk the latest injury, transfer and Texas recruiting news, including several players who are ready to end their relationship with Texas. We also check in on two of the most sought after recruits in the nation, as well as several prospects who made their way to Austin this past weekend. Finally, we check in on the team to see how they are prepping for the Purple Wizard.
On the other hand, if you have a DL that can win the point of attack and withstand double teams you buy time for speedy linebackers and safeties to check off their assignments and still arrive in time to make the tackle before the runner has picked up a major gain. Or, if you can get an extra guy in the box you can tip the scales back in your own favor. Generally you need both to really shut down one of the better Big 12 running games.
HOUSTON -- The need for defensive tackles in Austin looks much improved after today. Jordan Elliott will make sure of it. The 6-foot-4, 280-pound lineman from Houston Westside committed to Texas today in an announcement at his school and put the finishing touches on a monumental day in Austin.
It's Texas-OU weekend and the Horns are the hosts for recruits. We look at the bigger picture with Texas recruiting right now, the targets, and how the 2nd half of the season could shape the C/O 2016 and Charlie Strong's future in Austin. We also add practice notes and depth chart updates from the Cotton Bowl in the Scoop.
We start in South Beach with a play-making LB, head west to Dallas/Fort Worth for a multi-position athlete, veer south and stop by East Texas for a tight end, and finish in Houston with one of UT's top DT prospects. Here's this week's top targets put under the microscope.... Do you even Notebook, bro?
This week's Notebook starts in Houston with the state's top LB and finishes in Central Texas with a trio of up-and-comers.
