Texas linebacker Joseph Ossai began Saturday’s game versus Oklahoma State more restricted than he would have preferred. Ossai, nursing a shoulder injury suffered versus Baylor, began the game in a brace but abandoned the protective measure at an early juncture. When Ossai became unencumbered by the brace, he was unleashed on the Oklahoma State defense.
Quarterback Sam Ehlinger, offensive lineman Samuel Cosmi, linebacker Joseph Ossai, safety Caden Sterns, and cornerback D'Shawn Jamison all were named to the Preseason All-Big 12 team, the conference announced Thursday.
Calling defense at the Power 5 level is a performance-based business. Todd Orlando’s 2019 regular season as Texas’ defensive coordinator resulted in his dismissal from Tom Herman’s program due to poor performance.
Todd Orlando is no longer the defensive coordinator at Texas in no small part because in 2019 he squandered some of the best pass-rushing personnel Texas has fielded in years. Despite having a dream 3-technique on the roster in Malcolm Roach and an emerging star edge rusher in Joseph Ossai, Texas rarely leveraged their talents together in their ideal positions.
In his sophomore season, linebacker Joseph Ossai was second on the Longhorns in tackles (81), tackles for loss (7.5), and interceptions (2). He did this bouncing between the boundary linebacker and rover positions, often playing both over the course of any of Texas’ 12 games.
By: Scipio Tex Joe Cook covered Todd Orlando's comments at the recent Texas High School Football Coaches Association meeting and they were revealing about how he feels about his defense and how it will be deployed. They are also very useful for assuaging sporadic fits of board paranoia that our starting defense will be a virtual base 4-3 with BJ Foster sitting on the bench and McCulloch, Ossai and Adeoye manned up on slot receivers and running backs.
