In his sophomore season, linebacker Joseph Ossai was second on the Longhorns in tackles (81), tackles for loss (7.5), and interceptions (2). He did this bouncing between the boundary linebacker and rover positions, often playing both over the course of any of Texas’ 12 games.
When freshman defensive tackle Keondre Coburn signed with Texas in February 2018, he made a promise on social media that he and the other members of Texas’ 2018 class would “beat OU and the rest of them.” Former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield didn’t appreciate Coburn’s guarantee.
Other than recruiting there isn't a whole lot in the off-season to tide us over other than talking about the team. Because of that, most of you know the current roster about as well as anyone. However, I do find it a worthwhile exercise to reassess each position and player one more time ahead of the season as a way to resharpen our familiarity with each.
Or, college entrance interview. With the Houston Under Armour All American combine being held at Westfield this past Sunday I had a feeling I'd see 2018 UA All-American Keondre Coburn. That bore out and offered the perfect time to see how he's been spending his final weeks as a high school student-athlete before embarking on college.
Texas is going to sign a talented group of players on Wednesday but a full class it doesn't make. For this class to truly be a success (on paper) it will have to continue rounding out rough edges by adding on the lines, at linebacker, and by landing a supplementary explosive athlete or two. In my years of doing percentages this certainly won't rival some of the most optimistic efforts. Perhaps some chickens are about to come home to roost due to tardy overtures from the staff? We’ll see. Plus quotes after the OV weekend in Austin. All in the Scoop.
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas and by that I mean NSD1. The Texas staff has put together quite the haul, even if players who are considered foregone conclusions to sign are often overlooked. It's like when you snooped around the house looking for your presents in advance of them being wrapped. It's not quite as fun when you know what you're going to get, but sometimes it's nice to remove anxiety out of the equation. Heaven forbid you don't get that Tonka truck defensive tackle.
