It's always fun when Texas-OU week arrives. It's a lot better when both teams are good. And even cooler when UT has a legit shot at topping the Sooners and ripping the lid off this 2018 season. We look at team/injury news and notes, plus the recruiting trends pointing upwards. Beat OU in the Monday Scoop.
A big weekend lies ahead for the staff. First and foremost is the exhibition scrimmage on Saturday night. It's not even a real scrimmage as the team is broken up differently than it normally is. Along with the scrimmage, Texas will host a very strong list of visitors. We'll tackle that aspect of the weekend in Part II.
Now that Texas has finally completed the 2016 class with some of the better Baylor recruits (that back in the day would have already been Longhorns) it’s time to talk impact. The first bit of impact that bears mentioning (see what I did there) is what this does to the Baylor program moving forward.
Who knew the month of June would be hotbed recruiting season? I loved Charlie Strong’s strategy back in February: “Take the defensive tackles, all of them.” I don’t think that’s a direct quote but it’s essentially what happened which is why I personally designed this celebratory photo — enjoy. I had no clue there’d be even more beef coming to the 40 Acres on the offensive side of the ball after signing day.
AUSTIN -- Maybe it was meant to be. It almost happened before National Signing Day back in February. Senior 5-star offensive lineman Patrick Hudson considered flipping from Baylor to Texas a week before NSD. Last month, after the problems in Waco boiled to the surface, he requested his release. Well, today Hudson decided to attend Texas. The 6-foot-5, 325-pound mauler chose UT over OU, A&M, Baylor, and others. Hudson is the 4th Baylor pledge to flip, joining WR Devin Duvernay inking with Texas on Wednesday, JP Urquidez and Donovan Duvernay on Saturday.
In this edition of Mondays in the Humidor we’re back to a tidbits format. There really isn’t a lot of information that can be gleaned from a squad who continues to just run and lift but we’ve got some information on the workouts and how they’re going. Preparations for Notre Dame have also begun in earnest, even at the player level, and our source chimes in on that situation as well.
This week's Scoop...where do we begin? Texas is close to adding a handful for the Class of 2016, we give percentages and its outlook. We also look at how and why Baylor released the signees from their LOI, and the role the Big 12 played in it. We add updates on a few 5-star recruits, and a Longhorn pledge who maybe looking around. We finish with hoops tidbits, including a new offer. It's the must-read Inside Scoop. Dig in.
We dive straight into the deep waters that are Baylor Football and how it affects Texas moving forward. We add recruiting notes/quotes on future visitors and new offers, and the latest on hoops recruiting and Shaka's next recruit. We also drop the news that a current Texas coach is on BU's radar to replace Art Briles. The Inside Scoop never disappoints.
We are five days from National Signing Day. Less than a week from what is turning out to be a monumental finish, the first domino dropped last night with the pledge of Waco 4-star DB Eric Cuffee. With a handful of Texas targets slated to announce on NSD, the class looks to finish in the 23-24 range, and if they land the majority of final targets, UT could have a Top 10-15 class at the end of the day.
