At this point in the season, it's important to get a sense of what coaches are thinking about a variety of subjects. For that reason, the entirety of Sterlin Gilbert's press conference from Tuesday has been transcribed here:
Prior to the West Virginia game, the Texas had yet to lose a game at Royal-Memorial Stadium. The Mountaineers came in and changed all that, and part of it was due to a stifling defense keeping Texas to a season low of 20 points. Offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert, even with the numbers his players put up, admitted just how good he thought the WVU defense was at Tuesday’s availability.
Texas forced West Virginia into a season-high four turnovers, including three in the third quarter, but turnovers do not put points on the scoreboard. Texas’ inability to change takeaways into more than seven points and its season-low point total of 20 helped the No. 11 Mountaineers leave Austin with a 24-20 victory.
LUBBOCK -- The closer D'Onta Foreman gets to setting records, the closer they get to saving Charlie Strong's job. A record-breaking 341-yard, three-touchdown performance and a Kris Boyd game-sealing interception helped lead the Longhorns to a 45-37 victory over Texas Tech at Jones AT&T Stadium on Saturday.
The numbers Texas offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert’s offense has put up in the 2016 season are in part due to the multiple looks he can give opposing defenses. Gilbert can run two tight ends on the field, or five wide receivers, or a mix of both.
Senior Tim Cole is a member of what has been one of the most criticized units on this year’s Longhorn football team, the linebackers. Part of what has been plaguing the defense includes the opposing offensive line’s ability to get to linebackers and push them out of the way for their runner. The fix, according to Cole, is in the technique.
This week's Humidor provides a healthy puff of team information, including the status of the o-line, secondary and a young running back. The staff then breaks down what else Texas could be doing in its "Texas fast" veer and shoot scheme, including a few simple changes. Finally, we jump into where the recruitment of one of the state's top wide outs is currently.
We're at the midway point in the season for Texas and the Horns stand at 3-3. We've seen progression in spots and regression in others. But there's one element you can't deny; it's Charlie Strong's best start since he arrived on the 40 Acres. I present my 3rd annual Texas Midseason Awards in 2016.
