So far, Texas hasn’t faced a difficult schedule. In early season RPI rankings via Warren Nolan, Texas has played teams ranked 257th, 140th, 168th, 78th, and 64th. This weekend, they’ll face LSU, Arkansas, and Missouri in Houston during the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic at Minute Maid Park.
AUSTIN -- Of Texas’ first nine opponents, Sam Houston State was the toughest. SHSU was the only Longhorn foe thus far ranked in the top 100 of the NCAA’s RPI rankings. The Bearkats still met the same fate, a loss, as everyone else David Pierce’s ballclub has played this year.
In early 2020, sophomore Ty Madden had the notion from his preseason performance that the Saturday starter spot belonged to him. What he didn’t know was who might be behind the plate for those starts.
HOUSTON – Junior first baseman Zach Zubia stepped to the plate in the top of the third moments after his team relinquished a first-inning lead. Starter Bryce Elder hit three batters in the second, and the third occasion gave the Rice Owls a 2-1 lead.
On March 6, 2019, the Texas Longhorns were 11-3 and coming off a midweek win over UT-Rio Grande Valley and a sweep of No. 1 LSU in Austin. That day, Texas announced senior catcher DJ Petrinsky would miss the remainder of the season with a torn labrum. The Longhorns went 16-24 the rest of the way, finished 27-27, and were left out of both the NCAA and Big 12 tournaments.
