AUSTIN -- In the press conference introducing new Longhorn head baseball coach David Pierce, a variety of emotions filled the room. Athletic director Mike Perrin beamed with pride about the third revenue sport hire in as many years.
A Texas native who has spent most of his 27-year career coaching in the state, David Pierce has been named head baseball coach at The University of Texas, Men's Athletics Director Mike Perrin announced Wednesday. Pierce, just the fifth Longhorn head coach since 1911 (with the exception of the war years of 1943-45 when Blair Cherry was at the helm), is the 13th head coach in 122 years of Texas baseball. He will be introduced on Thursday at a news conference on the UT campus.
AUSTIN, Texas – After a record-setting and storied 48-year baseball coaching career, including 20 years at The University of Texas, Augie Garrido is accepting a position as Special Assistant to the Athletics Director and relinquishing his duties as the Longhorns coach, Men’s Athletics Director Mike Perrin said on Monday.
Most of you, I would suspect, will not agree with what I'm about to say. If you are on this site, you probably are serious about your Longhorns, you have high expectations for UT sports teams, and you want the school to always strive to do the right thing. Which is why Augie Garrido should be allowed to finish his contract next year as the Texas baseball coach.
AUSTIN -- On Thursday, head coach Augie Garrido said that his team avoided “the weird” in their win over the TCU Horned Frogs. The Texas Longhorns avoided “the weird” again on Friday, taking game two over the Frogs 2-0 in a game that lasted only two hours and 14 minutes.
SAN MARCOS -- After allowing the Texas State Bobcats to tie the game with two home runs, the Texas Longhorns exploded for six runs in the 11th to defeat the Bobcats, 10-4 in San Marcos. Through four innings, Texas only had two hits on four hard hit balls. They advanced a runner to second in the first after junior center fielder Zane Gurwitz reached on an infield single. After being moved on a sacrifice, Gurwitz failed in his attempt to steal third with two outs.
AUSTIN, Texas—A dominant eight innings by senior starter Ty Culbreth and a nine-run, 13-hit effort from the Longhorns offense propelled No. 23 Texas to a 9-0 shutout win over visiting Stanford. The Longhorns now lead the series two games to one.
After visiting Omaha in 2014 and reaching the national semifinals, 2015 was supposed to be another banner year for the Texas Longhorns baseball program. While the team began strong out of the gate, a midseason non-conference sweep at the hands of Nebraska proved to be a major turning point in the season. The team stumbled into the Big 12 Tournament, needing to win in Oklahoma City to even have a chance at the field of 64.
