In senior defensive lineman Breckyn Hager’s first four games of the 2017 season, he totaled just three tackles and one sack. Most of his snaps came on special teams or on third down, where his deficiencies in moving backwards off the line of scrimmage could be hidden. As a result, he found a perfect role for Hager, but there was work to be done by the former Westlake defender to succeed in that role.
AUSTIN -- For the Texas Longhorns, the tumultuousness of a 6-6 season seemed to be quickly forgotten after they defeated Missouri in the Texas Bowl. For head coach Tom Herman, that game allowed the team to finally realize what Herman and his staff could do at Texas.
As an athlete at Harker Heights HS, Texas 5th-year senior Naashon Hughes originally bought into the way of doing things set by former coach Mack Brown and former S&C coach Bennie Wylie. Beginning in 2014, Hughes did things Charlie Strong and Pat Moorer’s way. Now, entering his senior season, Hughes is doing things the way Tom Herman and Yancy McKnight want them to be done. Even though his time in Austin has been one of constant change, this offseason was an easier transition because of the previous few seasons.
On Friday, new head strength and conditioning coach for football Yancy McKnight was made available to the media. McKnight, who served with Tom Herman at multiple stops, went in-depth on his process, relationship building, the Oregon controversy, and the pieces he has to mold before spring ball starts.
