Texas Beats Dallas Baptist, 7-2

The Texas Longhorns used eight hits and eight walks, a solid starting

performance from Cole Green and four hitless innings of relief from the

bullpen to post a 7-2 win over the Dallas Baptist Patriots in

collegiate baseball action Wednesday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

Green (1-0) earned the victory, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five over 5.0 innings. Stayton Thomas, Andrew McKirahan and Chance Ruffin combined on four shutout frames. Thomas worked 2.1 innings retiring all seven batters he faced with one strikeout. McKirahan allowed a walk but followed with a double play grounder to work 0.2 innings. Ruffin closed out the game with two walks and two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth.

Dallas Baptist (3-1) took an early lead thanks to an RBI ground out by Moro in the top of the second inning. Travis Meiners drew a leadoff walk and with one out Ryan Thompson and Ryan Behmanesh loaded the bases with singles before Moro bounced into the RBI grounder.Texas (2-2) responded with four runs in the bottom of the third. Tant Shepherd singled through the right side of the infield to spark the rally. Cameron Rupp singled to rightfield and Russell Moldenhauer walked to load the bases. Kevin Keyes bounced into a fielder’s choice to plate Shepherd with the equalizer. After Connor Rowe grounded out two put runners at second and third, Dallas Baptist starter Chris Haney balked sending Keyes to third and Rupp to home, securing a Longhorn lead. Kevin Lusson was hit by pitch and stole second base to put two runners in scoring position. Kyle Lusson singled to shortstop driving in Keyes and Jordan Etier laced a single to left field, pushing Kevin Lusson across.The Longhorns tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Shepherd walked and Rupp doubled down the leftfield line to put runners at second and third and Keyes doubled down the left field line to plate the both for a 6-1 advantage. The Patriots trimmed a run off the lead in the fifth. With one out, Austin Knight singled up the middle, Ryan Enos singled to leftfield and Tyler Robbins walked to load the bases. Jason Krizan grounded out to first base to score Knight, but Green induced a fly ball by Meiners to get out of the inning with further damage.Texas responded with a run of its own in the bottom half of the fifth. Kyle Lusson started the frame with a wall-banger to the gap in left centerfield for a double. He moved to third on a fly ball to centerfield by Etier and scored on a single through the right side of the infield by Brandon Loy for the 7-2 advantage.Kyle Lusson went 2-for-4 with one run, one double and one RBI. Rupp went 2-for-3 with one double and two runs scored. Keyes went 1-for-5 with one double, one stolen base and three RBI.
