When Texas played the Cyclones in 2015 it was just when Charlie’s team had seemed to turn the corner. The Longhorns had just defeated Oklahoma and Kansas State in consecutive weeks thanks to Jerrod Heard getting 36 carries for 176 yards and Texas cementing their identity as a “run first, run second, run third” team. Then they travelled up to Ames and the Cyclones exposed the weaknesses of that one-dimensional offense with a humiliating 24-0 beating.

It’s possible that Texas is in store for a similarly rude awakening when they play the Cyclones this Saturday in Austin. The Cyclones coaching staff, led by young Matt Campbell and defensive coordinator Jon Heacock, have already faced the Veer and Shoot three times, including a matchup with Sterlin Gilbert back in 2014.
