Texas and Abilene Christian square off this Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium and Texas head coach Shaka Smart will try to break through the ceiling with his best Longhorn team yet.
Abilene Christian stands in the way. And they check many of the boxes of a traditional giant killer.
The 23-4 Southland champions returned 10 players from a 27 win NCAA tournament team last year and largely dominated their competition with a 13-2 conference record this year, including a 34 point conference title game blowout of Nicholls State. In that game, they outscored the Colonels by 29 points in the second half as Nicholls wilted under ACU’s defensive pressure. The Wildcats won their season contests by an average of 16 points per game and certainly pass the tourney heat check test: they’ve won 13 of their last 14. They are undoubtedly playing their best basketball right now.
